Archaeological and Historical Journals in England, Scotland and Wales
This is principally intended as a list of journals which have an index or table of contents on-line. Tables of contents for fourteen journals (along with a searchable database) are now available on ARCHway, a site cataloguing the archaeology journal holdings of 20 libraries in the UK.
- The Antiquaries Journal is published by the Society of Antiquaries of London. It aims to reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of the study of material culture, publishing a balanced mix of papers from all periods, from prehistory to the recent past. The online edition is published on the Cambridge Journals Online website every year. First view articles are available free for a limited period immediately after publication and thereafter by subscription or pay per view. Tables of contents for Volumes 1 (1921) to 83 (2003) are available on the ARCHway website along with abstracts of the contents of Volumes 78 (1998) to 87 (2007).
- Antiquity: a quarterly review of World Archaeology - 'Our field is the Earth, our range in time a million years or so, our subject the human race.' O.G.S. Crawford. The on-line Antiquity Archive includes a Featured Article and Editor's Choice, which can be read for free. Tables of contents since the first volume in 1927 are freely available on-line, and all articles can be downloaded as PDF files by subscription or pay-per-view. Some articles in more recent volumes are free. Also on-line is the Antiquity Bulletin, which is free to access - news, obituaries and some short articles.

Assemblage
A dynamic online archaeology journal by postgraduate students at the University of Sheffield. It contains peer-reviewed research papers, features, opinion essays, reviews, fun pages, bulletin boards, and links to relevant websites. It has been published more or less annually since 1996, and all 7 issues are freely accessible online.

British Archaeology
Glossy popular magazine published by the Council for British Archaeology. News and reports from around the UK, with many articles on the European and Middle Eastern background.

Current Archaeology
The original glossy magazine of British archaeology, published since about 1970 (243 issues). Illustrated popular reports of excavations in the UK, with themed issues, often based on a particular region. Brief tables of contents available from the beginning; fuller tables of contents and abstracts from more recent issues.

Internet Archaeology
A fully refereed e-journal published by the Council for British Archaeology, has now reached its 11th issue, and is available by subscription. Searching is free of charge, giving access to abstracts and table of contents for all issues from 1 (1996) to date (the full text of Vol 1 is freely available).
'Internet Archaeology is a multi-media journal only available on the web and has no print equivalent. It includes elements that would be impossible in a paper publication: searchable databases to analyse online - full-colour, interactive images - video footage - virtual reality models - seamless intermeshing between interpretation and data - access to related digital archive material - hierarchical publication which allows you to choose the level of detail you want - a variety of indexing and searching methods'.

Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological Society
The Derbyshire Archaeological Society publishes an annual journal covering the history and archaeology of the county. The journal has been published since 1879. An on-line, searchable Subject Index is available for the entire run, Vols 1-121, 1879-2001.
- The Transactions of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society. The Society was founded in 1855 for the purpose of investigating the antiquities and early history of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Metropolitan County of Middlesex. The Transactions are published once a year, and the Newsletter three times a year.. The 'Archives' link on the home page directs you to tables of contents for the Transactions from Volume 20 (1959-61) to Volume 51 (2000). The Newsletter from January 2008 to January 2009 can be downloaded in full as a PDF file.

London Archaeologist
A glossy magazine about excavations in London. Tables of contents since summer 1997 are available. An on-line index is in preparation, and the on-line version of the magazine can be searched on the British and Irish Archaeological Bibliography (BIAB) database.

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society
The Society was originally founded as the Prehistoric Society of East Anglia in 1908, and the current name was established in 1935. The Prehistoric Society's interests are world wide and extend from the earliest human origins to the emergence of written records. The Proceedings have been published since 1910, and have had their present name since 1935. Abstracts and tables of contents are available for Volumes 63-64 (1997-98), and a subject and author index for Volumes 56-60 (1990-1994). Full table of contents on ARCHway.

- Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports. Published by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the purpose of SAIR is to publish papers which particularly benefit from electronic publishing - longer than 20,000 words, many illustrations, many or very long tables. All papers are peer reviewed. They are available free of charge, and can be downloaded in PDF form as whole articles or as individual components.
